With this guide we will show you step by step how to install and update DSM. If you get any errors during the process, scroll to the end of this guide where we will be able to see some errors and how to fix them.

Remember to make a backup of all your data and if you have a HDD and a USB to test and not mess up the DSM that we already have.

You need either the Balena or Rufus program.

Balena:

Now we need the RR image:

– https://github.com/RROrg/rr/releases

We download the file:

rr-x.x.xx.img.zip (If we are going to make a USB to install on a PC)

If what we are going to make is a virtual machine, we will do it with the file: rr-x.x.xx.ova.zip In this guide we will perform the installation on a PC.

Once Rufus and the RR img are downloaded, open Rufus and select the device where you are going to install it.
Then click SELECT and choose the RR image.

Click start and wait until it finishes.

Edit Grub

Start the PC and configure the boot from the USB in the BIOS. Once configured and booted from the USB, it will show you the following grub image:

Select “Configure loader” to start the boot loader configuration.

When we see the screen that gives us the IP, we can now access the boot loader configuration. We only have to see the URL that it gives us in blue http://xxx.xxx.xxx.x:xxxx and access it through the browser.

After this, the following screen will appear in the browser:

Choose language

• The first thing for me, since my English is terrible, is to go to point h – Configuration menu.
• And once there, choose point L Choose a language and choose the language we want.

Choose model

• To do this, we choose the first option m – Choose the model and it will give us a list with all the available devices.
• We choose the version of DSM that we are going to update.
• After selecting the device, it will show us a URL that, when clicked, will download a .pat file which is the Synology firmware and we will need it later.

Create-Build bootloader

• The next step is to choose the option: d – build loader and wait for it to finish.
• When it finishes, we will return to the main menu and we will have to choose the option: b – place the loader.
• Once the following screen will appear and after a few minutes we will be able to access Synology from the URL that appears in blue.

Once the DSM has loaded, we can access it from the browser with the previous URL or with Synology Assistant or from the URL: finds.synology.com

Now this is where it changes whether it is an update or a new installation. But practically it is to advance and where we say to download the software or load it from our PC, we choose to load and select the .pat that we have downloaded before and we would have it.

Errors and Solutions:

Error when burning the img in Balena.
Solution: Choose Rufus.

The screen does not look good in the process of creating the boot.
Solution: Reboot and when the first screen appears choose the last option called “Change vesa to text video mode”.

Error when loading the DSM software (error -13).
Solution: Although it may be due to different causes, it was solved for me by lowering the version of DSM instead of choosing the latest one, reboot and configure the boot again by putting an older version. And once inside DSM we proceed to manually download the latest version of software, but not loading it from the PC, otherwise we give it an update.
